Chicago residents have gotten used to these stories but they are still startling to any concerned American. Another horrific weekend just unfolded, leaving numerous citizens injured. 62 people were shot but to the local newspapers, this is an improvement. Three of the shootings were fatal and the papers were right, in a perverse way.
71 shootings took place during the weekend before this last one, 12 of them were fatal. No one is safe in Chicago, not even the children. A 13 year old was shot in the leg while hanging out in an alley in the middle of the afternoon. The homicide cases have led to zero arrests at the moment, which should be disconcerting to any local resident.
All of these murderers are still walking the streets and no one knows what to do next. The Chicago Sun Times says that these are the lowest numbers that the city has seen in weeks. If that’s the case, the city of Chicago has a long way to go before they get their violence under control. Two new teams of officers have been deployed.
City officials believe that they are an effective deterrent as far as the violence is concerned but only time is going to tell. It’s pretty ironic that the liberal cities that were so concerned about removing their police forces have already started to bend to the will of the people. We all knew that this rhetoric was not going to hold up over the long haul.
President Trump is never going to miss an opportunity to take the side of the police and he spoke out about the violence in Chicago. The surge in shootings that took place over the weekend is a major problem in the president’s eyes. While there are some leaders who are not going to acknowledge the violence because it goes against their chosen narrative, he is most certainly not one of them.
Trump decided to handle the matter somewhat diplomatically, at least. He contacted the mayor of Chicago and they spoke about potential solutions. The president wants to send additional police to the city, in an effort to curb the violence. Mayor Lightfoot seems to be in agreement with his ideas. When Reuters went to speak to the residents of Chicago about the deployment of more officers, the results won’t shock you.
All the well meaning liberals who do not actually have to deal with the violence are saying whatever they think will sound good on Twitter. Meanwhile, the non virtue signalers who are forced to reside in the dangerous neighborhoods are all for the increased police presence. They are the ones who are forced to feel unsafe and we’re not sure why they aren’t being taken seriously.
People like to assume that these cities are full of people without common sense. In reality, the violent citizens are a vocal minority and the average resident is just as fed up as the rest of us. We wish that the liberals would take that into account when they are offering up their unwanted commentary about cities like Chicago.
Damien Morris, director of violence prevention initiatives for local nonprofit Breakthrough, spoke out about the violence. “When you have women and kids getting shot – innocent bystanders – you have residents that feel like something needs to happen,” says Damien. We are going to be paying close attention going forward. Are these police officers going to be able to make a real difference in Chicago?
This is a city that is teetering on the brink of full scale violence. Even the Washington Post agrees with this assessment. The silly liberals who have tried to do everything in their power to keep the mean old police away from the people who need them the most ought to be ashamed of themselves. Of course, we all know that the liberals are incapable of feeling shame so that’s probably not going to happen anytime soon!
